COPPER MOUNTAIN — With 9 inches of fresh powder and a 45-inch base, Copper is reporting mid-winter conditions and some epic powder skiing after a slow start to the season. snowfall was widespread across Colorado during the latest storm, with anywhere from 4 to 11 inches reported at resorts around the state.

The new snow will likely enable Copper to open additional terrain this weekend, so check in with the mountain’s conditions report for the latest updates.

The forecast calls for snow showers to linger Friday, followed by a clear and cold night and a gorgeous weekend, sunny and warming temperatures. Another storm is forecast to hit the area Monday night, bringing another chance of snow.

COPPER MOUNTAIN — After several weeks of lackluster weather, winter is making a strong comeback in Colorado with a weekend storm that dumped 4 inches at Copper Mountain. Ski areas statewide picked up fresh snow, with 19 inches at Silverton Mountain, 18 inches at Wolf Creek and 15 inches at Crested Butte.

At Copper, the Alpine Lift has opened for the season, serving Formidable and Triple Treat, and the ski patrol is trying to open parts of the upper mountain for directed skiing, with limited access to steeper terrain. Copper is reporting 8 inches of snow in the past week with a 32-inch base and 68 inches for the season so far. The best conditions of the season are just ahead.

The forecast for the rest of the week calls for high winds over the higher elevations Tuesday night and Wednesday as the jet stream noses into the northern Rockies, then a spell of stormy weather lasting through next weekend, as several storms barrel into the area on a northwest flow. With plenty of moisture riding the jet stream, Copper and the rest of the mountains around Summit County could pick more than a foot of snow by late in the weekend.

SUMMIT COUNTY — A pair of storms have delivered about six inches of new snow to Copper Mountain the past few days, and the medium-range forecast calls for a storm track that should bring a bit more powder love to Summit County and northern Colorado.

Season snowfall at Copper so far totals 62 inches, or about 5 feet, and the resort is reporting a 30-inch base, with more than 800 acres of terrain open on 78 trails served by 15 lifts. The full snow and trails report is online here.

A bit more snow is expected through Wednesday evening, with a return to dry and cool conditions Thursday and Friday. The holiday weekend looks to be dry and mild for January, before a moist westerly flow develops next week.

COPPER MOUNTAIN — Another season is under way at Copper Mountain, as the Summit County resort celebrated opening day with the traditional Lift Off festivities, including the local premier of “The Art of Flight,” a film produced by Red Bull Media House in association with Brain Farm Digital Cinema. The Blu-ray TM viewing will be in Bighorn Ballroom located in Conference Center, right in the middle of the Village on a 7-by-12 foot High-Definition screen.

Early season events continue with the Colorado Demo Days (Nov. 19-20), the opening of the Superpipe (Nov. 24, conditions permitting) and the popular Thanksgiving events, including theLeftover Yam Jam (first rail jam of the year, Nov. 25), followed by the Gobbler Snowshoe Race and the first En Fuego (Both on Nov. 26. Copper Mountain currently has 3 lifts open (American Eagle and Easy Rider Surface Lift, while the Excelerator Lift is open for race training only), 4 trails (Rhapsody to Main Vein and the Woodward at Copper Bouncer Terrain Par, and once again Copperopolis is only open for race training) and 49.7 acres of skiable terrain, with an 18 inch base.

Opening day is just a week away!

SUMMIT COUNTY — The late-October storm that hit Colorado pasted the Front Range but also dumped significant amounts of snow on the high country. According to the official National Weather Service stats, Copper Mountain picked up the most snow, with 18 inches reported at the MESO West weather station. Along with Ullr’s gift, Copper’s snowmaking crews have been hard at work. On the upper part of the mountain, ski teams are already carving practice turns, and down near the base, groomers are pushing huge whales of machine-made snow into place, preparing to shape the halfpipe and put down a base for the ski area’s opening day, Nov. 4. The forecast is calling for fair weather through Tuesday, with a progressive weather pattern bringing a series of Pacific storms through the area next week, though the exact timing and strength of those systems is not clear yet. Think snow!

COPPER MOUNTAIN — A late October snowstorm pounded the Colorado high country Wednesday, Oct. 26, with Arapahoe Basin and Loveland ski areas reporting 12 inches of new snow by mid-morning.

Copper Mountain hasn’t started reporting official snowfall totals yet, but snowfall amounts of 10 inches or more were widespread across the mountain resorts along the I-70 corridor.

Cold temperatures the next few days will help Copper’s snowmaking crews put the finishing touches on the early season base in preparation for the Nov. 4 opening.

Ski teams from around the world are also converging on Copper for early season training.

SUMMIT COUNTY —Snowmaking crews at Summit County’s oldest ski area say they’ve created an 18-inch base, enabling the area to open for the season this week. Opening day is Oct. 13, with skiing on one run served by the Black Mountain Express quad. Tickets are $59.

The snowmaking efforts were helped along by about eight inches of natural snow. The ski area has only been closed 100 days since last season ended on July 4, 2011. Check out Al’s Blog for more …

Black Mountain Express will open to the public at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday.  Skiers and riders can look forward to an 18-inch base on the intermediate High Noon run along with several features in the High Divide Terrain Park.  There will be no beginner skiing at this time.

A tribute to Arapahoe Basin founders Marnie Jump and Max Dercum who passed away this year will take place before the lifts open to the public.

Youth tickets age 15 – 18 will be $49 and child tickets age 6-14 will be $30.  The ski and snowboard rental shop, tune shop, food and beverage service, the 6th Alley bar and retail shop will be open to the public.  Snowsports lessons will be available on a limited basis.

Local radio station, KYSL will be doing a live morning show and giving away lift tickets on-air.  KSMT will also be on site in the base area with a live remote, playing music and handing out give-aways.

A-Basin’s Bonus Passes are available while supplies last for $389.  The Bonus pass holder receives unlimited skiing or riding at A-Basin for the 2011-2012 ski season and five non-transferable ski days at Keystone or Breckenridge.  One of those days can be used at Vail or Beaver Creek (some restrictions apply).  A-Basin only passes are also available at great prices.  To purchase your pass or check snow conditions go to www.arapahoebasin.com.

COPPER MOUNTAIN — Right on schedule for the Colorado high country, an early October storm blew through the mountains, dropping temps into the snowmaking zone and leaving the mountains around Copper dusted with fresh white stuff. Long-time residents know that this is not unusual. Each of the last several years have seen snow the same time.

What does it mean for the rest of the season? Depends who you ask. Breckenridge weather watcher Rick Bly, who tallies snowfall stats for the National Weather Service, says that, if October is above-average, the rest of the winter tends to bring at least average snowfall.

Look closely and you can see the clouds of frozen water vapor from Copper snow guns going full blast in what will be the training venue for ski teams in just a few weeks.

Frisco welcomes winter!

After a dusting a few weeks ago, Copper is expecting the first signifcant snowfall of the season this week and will likely fire up its snowmaking system.

COPPER MOUNTAIN — With a winter storm watch in effect for the western Colorado mountains, it might be time to make sure you’re ready for the coming season, and that would include making sure you have a season pass. As the marketing folks at Copper Mountain put it, it’s time to renew your powder vows.

Rocky Mountain Super Passes and other season pass products for Copper, Winter Park and Steamboat are still on sale at pre-season rates, with prices guaranteed through Oct. 16.

The Super Pass Plus (unlimited skiing at Copper and Winter Park, plus six days at Steamboat) is $479, $239 for kids, $359 for teens.

Copper Mountain or Winter Park-only passes are $369, and the Super Pass (valid at Copper and Winter Park) is $409, while four-packs for Copper are $149, and $159 for Winter Park.
