Dillon, Breckenridge NWS sites report near-normal precip and temps for the month
By Bob Berwyn
SUMMIT COUNTY — The April stats are in, and as expected, the month was the first to deliver above-average precipitation since October.
At his backyard weather station in Breckenridge, Rick Bly totaled 26.4 inches in April, just about 2 inches more than the average 24.7 inches. For the year-to-date (Oct. 1 – April 1), snowfall at his weather station is 81 percent of average, at 124.6 inches compared to the average 153.5.
April’s wet snow and rain helped bring the moisture totals for the weather year closer to average. Early in the month, total precipitation for the season was only at about 80 percent of normal, but with 2.45 inches of water in April, the year-to-date reading is 10,07 inches, or about 90 percent of the average 11.2 inches.
May can go either way. It’s about the sixth-wettest month of the year and snowfall varies widely. The all-time record was 1895, with 43.9 inches. In the “modern” era, 1983 delivered 35.3 inches of snow, and the average is 10.9 inches.
The driest May on record was 1994, with no reported precipitation and the wettest was 1899, with 5.89 inches.
The report from Dillon, where Denver Water officials tally weather records for the National Weather Service, is similar. April delivered 1.89 inches of water compared to the average 1.61 inches. Snowfall was 15.5 inches, compared to the average 18.1, with measurable snowfall on 12 days. The biggest single dump was 4 inches on April 29.
Temperatures at the Dillon site were close to average for the month. The average daily high was 46.9 degrees, just a tad below the historic average of 47.7 degrees. The high for the month came April 22, at 61 degrees. The thermometer climbed into the 50s and 60s on 16 days, but it stayed chilly a few times. On April 7, and again on April 30, the daily high was only 24 degrees.
The low reading for the month was 4 degrees on April 9.
The outlook for the next few days includes scattered showers under building afternoon clouds, according to the National Weather Service. Expect a warm-up for the weekend.
